Report about 'Die Hit Giganten - Pop & Wave der 80er' in Berlin on 5th March 2005

When the official German Limahl fan club learned the fantastic news of Limahl's appearance in the Sat 1 (German channel) show 'Die Hit Giganten' which was announced at fairly short notice, some fans decided to go to the broadcast of the show and jumped at the chance to spend some great time together. The fans we are talking about are Betty, Katja, Ela and Steffi.

With lots of luck we could get hold of some tickets for the show which was actually already sold out. Since the 'Here And Now' tour, we already knew that we all get along very well and so the decision was quickly made that we wanted to share accommodation in Berlin where the broadcast took place. The broadcast of the show was not the only highlight of our short trip in Berlin - it was also the birthday of Katja (*grin*) which we wanted to celebrate duly.

So on Friday, 4th March, we packed our bags and hit the road. Ela and her husband Frank went by car while the others travelled by German National Railways. Meeting point was the holiday flat we hired. As it's been such a long time since we all last met, everyone received a big reception when arriving. We quickly realized that everybody was quite hungry so we decided to find a nice and snugly place. We took the underground and found an Italian restaurant on Ku’damm where our hunger could be satisfied.

Then it was time to get ready for the important event - the beginning of a new year of Katja. We have planned having a party on the eve of her birthday in a nice club. But as we know quite good, it is normally different as you had planned…. because unfortunately Berlin has got a huge parking problem. After having found the club after an extensive search we couldn't say the same for a free parking place. So in the end she slided into her new year in the car, but still everybody was in high spirits and so we continued partying in the flat and not to forget on the next day.

On this evening, another important event that is to say took place, namely the recording of the show. After everybody was dressed up we left for the studios – and ... as we are quite adaptive, we went by train this time. As we arrived a bit early, we had to shiver outside because it was quite cold in Berlin – and the desire for a hot coffee or tea was big. But then shortly before the development of the first icicles on our noses, we could all go in the studio and found a very good seat. The theme of the show 'Pop and Wave of the 80s' was exactly what we liked so we were sure to enjoy it very much.

Limahl with his band

It all started with a small warm-up to get the audience in high spirits and Hugo Egon Balder, the host of this show, showed up shortly before the broadcast to welcome the audience personally. Then it was time. And after about half an hour it was Limahl’s turn. He presented his hit 'Too Shy' in a new outfit. His hair was longer and concerning his clothes he was wearing a white t-shirt, jeans and a new jacket which looked pretty cool. His fans were thrilled at any case. Of course, Limahl didn’t miss the chance to encourage the audience to sing along during the performance. But that's the way we know him and above all love him – one of the stars who is always looking for the closeness to his audience. When he finished his song, Limahl briefly took a seat on the couch and joined Hugo Egon Balder and his prominent guests. He patiently answered the sixty-four-dollar question again about the origin of the band name 'Kajagoogoo' and fooled around a bit with Sabrina Setlur and also with Dirk Bach. Unfortunately, his performance was over too quickly again. Afterwards, the audience could enjoy the performances of further well-known artists of the 80s, like e.g. Gazebo ('I like Chopin'), Max Werner ('Rain in May'), Visage ('Fade to grey') and not to forget the wonderfully presented live performance of 'Tainted Love' by Marc Almond.

After three hours the show was over, but not the evening. On the adjacent aftershow party, where Limahl sneaked us in *gg* we had the opportunity to talk to Limahl and to take some photos with him. After Limahl said goodbye, we shook our legs to the music, put our music requests to the DJ and also took a pic with Gazebo. About 3:00 am the appetite was so strong that we left the party and visited instead one of these famous fastfood chains.

After a few hours of sleep it was time to say goodbye to Berlin.

As a result it can be put forward that this weekend was again a wonderful fan-meeting and Limahl’s performance was again stunning.

All the best from
Betty, Katja, Ela and Steffi
